OVO Energy is one of the UK's largest energy suppliers, with around 4 million customers. It launched in 2009 as a small independent supplier and grew quickly, most notably by buying SSE's home energy business in 2020.
In May 2026, E.ON agreed to buy OVO. The deal is expected to complete in the second half of 2026, subject to regulatory approval, and until then OVO continues to run as normal.
OVO is being bought by E.ON, but nothing changes for customers yet. Existing tariffs will be honoured in full while the deal goes through. OVO ranks well with Citizens Advice, but it had one of the lowest customer scores in the latest Which? survey, so compare prices and service before you switch.

Tariff names correct as of July 2026. OVO also supplies Pay As You Go customers.
On 11 May 2026, E.ON announced that it had agreed to buy OVO. The deal is expected to complete in the second half of 2026, once it has regulatory approval. Together, the two companies would supply around 9.6 million customers, making them Britain's largest energy supplier.
The sale follows a difficult period for OVO. Ofgem has tightened the financial rules that suppliers must meet, and OVO had been looking for new investment to strengthen its finances.
Nothing changes for OVO customers yet. E.ON has said existing tariffs will be honoured in full and service will continue unchanged while the deal is reviewed. We'll update this page once there's news on what happens to OVO accounts after the sale completes. See our E.ON Next review for more on the buyer.
OVO scores 4.6 out of 5 on Trustpilot from nearly 288,000 reviews, and it is good to see that OVO responds to negative reviews.

OVO did poorly in the latest Which? survey, from September and October 2025. It scored 61%, which was the joint lowest customer score of the 17 suppliers, and it received two stars out of five in every customer category. The most common complaint was Direct Debit payments being set incorrectly.
Which? did give it 9 out of 10 for the help it offers vulnerable customers, and good marks for how easy it is to contact.
Citizens Advice paints a better picture, rating OVO 3.65 out of 5 for April to June 2026, and placing it 6th among suppliers.
| Citizens Advice measure | Score |
|---|---|
| Customer commitments | 5 out of 5 |
| Contact waiting time | 4.2 out of 5 |
| Billing and metering | 4 out of 5 |
| Fewer complaints | 2.5 out of 5 |
Its average call waiting time was 47 seconds, and it answered almost 99% of emails within two days.
OVO Energy was founded in 2009 by Stephen Fitzpatrick with the aim of making energy "cheaper, greener and simpler". It grew through a mix of new customers and acquisitions, taking on the customers of failed suppliers Spark Energy in 2018 and Economy Energy in 2019.
Its biggest move came in January 2020, when it bought SSE's home energy business for £500 million, taking on around 3.5 million customers and 8,000 staff.
OVO has faced regulatory action over the years. In January 2020 it paid £8.9 million after billing and communication failures, and it has been fined several times since, including £2.8 million in January 2026 for failing to pass on government bill support to more than 11,000 customers. In June 2026, it agreed to pay £7 million into Ofgem's redress fund and provide £3.4 million in credit and debt relief after failings in how it monitored vulnerable prepayment customers.
Stephen Fitzpatrick now leads Kaluza, the energy software platform that was developed within the OVO group. E.ON will continue to use Kaluza's platform for OVO customers after the sale.
Any electricity we use is generated from a combination of different fuels such as gas, nuclear, coal and renewable sources (wind, hydro and the sun). The proportion of each fuel a supplier buys and sells makes up its fuel mix.
OVO no longer supplies 50% renewable electricity as standard. It stopped buying renewable certificates to cover its fossil fuel purchases, saying they do little for the environment, and instead focuses on helping customers cut their carbon footprint with smart technology. If you want renewable electricity, choose one of its greener electricity tariffs.
Here is OVO's fuel mix compared to the GB average.
| Supplier | Coal | Gas | Nuclear | Renewable | Other | CO2 (g/kWh) | Nuclear Waste (g/kWh) |
|---|
OVO has a solid range of fixed tariffs, good Citizens Advice scores, fast call answering and a useful EV charging add-on. On the other hand, its Which? customer scores are among the weakest in the market, and its future depends on the E.ON sale.
If you join OVO now, you'll keep your tariff until it ends, even if the E.ON deal completes. As always, compare prices using your own postcode and usage before switching.

Yes. E.ON agreed to buy OVO in May 2026, and the deal is expected to complete in the second half of 2026, subject to regulatory approval. Until then, OVO continues to run as normal.
E.ON has said existing OVO tariffs will be honoured in full and service will continue unchanged while the deal is reviewed. If you're on a fixed deal, your rates stay the same until it ends.
Its standard variable tariff has no exit fees. Fixed tariffs carry exit fees of £50 to £95 per fuel, although you can switch penalty-free in the final 49 days of any fixed deal.
Not as standard. OVO stopped supplying 50% renewable electricity on all tariffs, but it offers fixed tariffs with greener electricity included.
