So Energy is a UK energy supplier focused on renewable electricity and simple, good-value tariffs. It launched in November 2015 and now supplies around 300,000 customer accounts, with 100% renewable electricity on every tariff.
Its stated mission is to "help customers achieve net zero by providing great value renewable energy solutions with simple, clear, outstanding service". As well as gas and electricity, it offers solar panels, home batteries, EV chargers and, in some areas, heat pumps.
So Energy's owner, ESB, is looking to sell the business, and EDF is reported to be among the bidders. Nothing has been agreed yet. Customers rate So Energy well, but its Which? assessment and Citizens Advice scores are weaker, so it's worth comparing before you switch.

Tariff details correct as of July 2026.
In July 2026, So Energy's owner, ESB, announced it had started looking at options to sell the business. PwC is running the sale process.
In September 2026, EDF was reported to be in talks to buy So Energy's customers, with at least one other bidder also involved. No deal has been agreed so far.
What does this mean for customers? Nothing changes for now. If a sale goes ahead, customers would move to the new supplier without any interruption to their gas or electricity. We'll update this page when there is news.
So Energy scores around 4.5 out of 5 on Trustpilot from more than 30,000 reviews, and it is good to see that it actively responds to negative feedback and tries to help customers where it can.

So Energy's customers are happy. In the Which? survey from September and October 2025, it had a customer score of 76%, joint 5th of 17 suppliers, and just 2% of its customers had made a formal complaint, the lowest of any supplier.
However, it scored poorly in the Which? assessment of how suppliers handle complaints, contact and smart meters, which brought its overall score down to 60%. It isn't a Which? Recommended Provider.

Citizens Advice gave So Energy a customer service rating of 2.85 out of 5 for April to June 2026, placing it 11th among suppliers. It scored full marks for customer commitments, with an average call waiting time of 2 minutes, and answered almost 92% of emails within two days.
So Energy was founded in 2015 by school friends Simon Oscroft and Charlie Davies, with the aim of building an energy business around renewable energy and the principles of "simplicity, honesty and great value". It grew steadily without buying other suppliers, reaching around 220,000 customer accounts by 2021.
The energy crisis of 2021 and 2022 hit many suppliers hard, and in August 2021 So Energy merged with ESB Energy, the UK supply business of Ireland's Electricity Supply Board (ESB). The deal gave ESB control of the combined business, but kept the So Energy brand and helped it survive a crisis that saw dozens of suppliers go bust.
ESB is Ireland's largest energy company and is mostly owned by the Irish Government. As explained above, it is now looking to sell So Energy.
Any electricity we use is generated from a combination of different fuels such as gas, nuclear, coal and renewable sources (wind, hydro and the sun). Energy suppliers buy the electricity they sell to you from generators, and the proportion of each fuel makes up a supplier's fuel mix.
| Supplier | Coal | Gas | Nuclear | Renewable | Other | CO2 (g/kWh) | Nuclear Waste (g/kWh) |
|---|
True to its aim of being a renewable energy supplier, So Energy has supplied 100% renewable electricity since 2017, backed by Renewable Energy Guarantee of Origin (REGO) certificates.
So Energy may suit you if you want 100% renewable electricity, a simple choice of tariffs and a supplier that most of its customers rate highly. It also offers solar panels, batteries and EV chargers if you're planning to go further.
Bear in mind that its Which? assessment and Citizens Advice scores are weaker, and that the business is up for sale, so your supplier could change if a deal goes ahead. As always, compare prices using your own postcode and usage before switching.
