Shell Energy

Shell Energy is part of the global Shell brand - best known for its petrol service stations- and has recently taken over two established UK energy suppliers to grow its market share to around a million UK customers.

In 2018 it took over First Utility - then the largest challenger brand to the established 'Big Six UK energy suppliers - and subsequently rebranded as Shell Energy before taking over the supply of some 700,000 customers. Shell Energy then expanded further in 2019 when it bought Hudson Energy Supply, the parent company of Green Star Energy.

It also took on customers of Usio Energy in 2018, after being named as the Supplier of Last Resort (SoLR) when the smaller supplier stopped trading.

Shell Energy now not only offers 100% renewable electricity to UK households, it also provides gas, smart home technology, broadband and offers exclusive rewards at its service stations.

Why switch to Shell Energy?

Shell Energy could be a good option if you want to take advantage of the rates and offers provided by one of the biggest challenger brands in the UK's domestic energy market.

Shell Energy offers 100% renewable electricity from wind, solar and biomass, so could be worth considering if green energy is a priority, and also comes with some added extras you won’t be able to get from other energy suppliers, such as a 3% discount on fuel at Shell service stations, available on up to 60 litres of fuel per household per month.

What is Shell Energy's fuel mix?

Any electricity we use is generated from a combination of different fuels such as nuclear, coal and renewable sources (wind, water and the sun). The different amounts of each fuel contributed makes up a supplier’s fuel mix.

Here is Shell Energy's gas and electricity mix from March 25, 2019:

Electricity supplied by Shell Energy % of total Average for GB (for comparison) % of total

Renewable 100% 32.8%
