ScottishPower is one of the UK's largest energy suppliers, with more than 5 million home and business customers. Based in Glasgow, it has been owned by Spanish energy company Iberdrola since 2006.
In 2018, ScottishPower became the first of the UK's big energy companies to generate all of its electricity from wind, after selling its gas power stations and closing its coal plants. It now focuses on wind power and electricity networks, and uses its green credentials to stand out from other large suppliers.
ScottishPower has strong green credentials and a 4.4 Trustpilot score, but it came bottom in the latest Which? survey. It also has one of the higher complaint rates with Citizens Advice, so it's worth comparing prices and service before you switch.

ScottishPower scores 4.4 out of 5 on Trustpilot from around 193,000 reviews. Independent surveys are much less positive, though.
ScottishPower came bottom of the overall Which? rankings in its survey from September and October 2025, scoring 56%. It received two stars out of five in every customer category, including customer service, value for money and ease of contacting, and scored just 4 out of 15 for complaint handling.
ScottishPower also didn't take part in the Which? sustainability questionnaire, so it wasn't considered for Eco Provider status.
Citizens Advice gave ScottishPower a customer service rating of 2.76 out of 5 for April to June 2026, placing it 12th among suppliers. It had one of the highest complaint rates, at 76.4 per 10,000 customers, although it answered calls quickly and replied to almost 97% of emails within two days.

ScottishPower is owned by Iberdrola, the Bilbao-based energy group, which bought it in 2006 in an £11.6 billion deal. Iberdrola is one of the world's biggest renewable energy companies and a major investor in wind power, which explains ScottishPower's green focus.
ScottishPower was set up in 1990, ahead of the privatisation of Scotland's electricity industry in 1991. In 1995 it bought MANWEB, the regional electricity company for Merseyside and North Wales.
As well as supplying energy, it runs SP Energy Networks, which operates the electricity networks in Central and Southern Scotland, Merseyside, North Wales and parts of Cheshire and Shropshire. Keith Anderson is its chief executive.
Any electricity we use is generated from a combination of different fuels such as nuclear, gas, coal and renewable sources (wind, water and the sun). The different amounts of each fuel make up a supplier's fuel mix.
ScottishPower generates all of its own electricity from wind, but it also buys electricity from other generators. Here is its total fuel mix:
| Supplier | Coal | Gas | Nuclear | Renewable | Other | CO2 (g/kWh) | Nuclear Waste (g/kWh) |
|---|
This is ScottishPower's total fuel mix, which includes electricity supplied on non-green tariffs. The electricity supplied on its green tariffs comes from 100% renewable sources.
ScottishPower is worth considering if green credentials matter to you, as it generates all of its own electricity from UK wind farms, and it has the reassurance of being one of the UK's largest suppliers.
On the other hand, its Which? and Citizens Advice results are among the weakest in the market, and it has a relatively short tariff range. As always, compare prices using your own postcode and usage before switching.
