Ecotricity is an independent green energy supplier based in Stroud, Gloucestershire. It supplies 100% renewable electricity to homes and businesses across the UK, and it was the country's first green electricity supplier.
Rather than paying dividends, Ecotricity reinvests its profits into building new sources of green energy, such as wind and solar parks. It calls this approach 'bills into mills', with part of every customer's bill going towards new renewable generation.
Ecotricity is one of the UK's most committed green suppliers, and a Which? Eco Provider for 2026. It builds its own wind and solar parks and supplies 100% renewable electricity. Its prices aren't always the cheapest, and its Which? customer scores are middling, so it is worth comparing before you switch.

Citizens Advice gave Ecotricity a customer service rating of 3.4 out of 5 for April to June 2026, placing it 8th among suppliers. It scored full marks for customer commitments and had an average call waiting time of 49 seconds. Its weakest area was billing and metering.
Any electricity we use is generated from a combination of different fuels such as nuclear, coal and renewable sources (wind, water and the sun). The different amounts of each fuel make up a supplier's energy fuel mix.
Electricity: 100% renewable. Ecotricity's electricity comes from renewable sources, including its own wind and solar parks.
Gas: a mix of green gas and fossil gas. Ecotricity introduced green gas to the UK in 2010.
Ecotricity was founded in 1995 by Dale Vince, and it began supplying green electricity in 1996, making it the UK's first green electricity company.
Since a restructure in 2020, Ecotricity has been part of the Green Britain Group, which Dale Vince controls. In April 2022, Vince announced that he was looking for a new owner to help fund a big expansion of Ecotricity's renewable generation. He halted the sale later that year, and he remains the controlling shareholder. Asif Rehmanwala was appointed chief executive in 2023.
Vince is also well known as the owner of Forest Green Rovers, which describes itself as the world's first vegan and carbon-neutral football club.
Ecotricity launched with the aim of changing the way electricity is made and used in the UK. It started with a single wind turbine and has since built wind and solar parks across the country, including its 66 MW wind farm at Heckington Fen in Lincolnshire.
Its Ecobonds scheme has also helped fund green projects. Past projects include:
If you are looking for a supplier with genuine green credentials, Ecotricity is a good option. It supplies 100% renewable electricity, it builds its own renewable generation, and it reinvests its profits into more of it.
Bear in mind that green suppliers aren't always the cheapest, and Ecotricity's Which? customer scores are middling. It pays to compare prices using your own postcode and usage, so you can weigh up the green credentials against the cost.
