Update26 August 2026: Ofgem has confirmed the October price cap at £1,723 a year for a typical dual-fuel household paying by direct debit, a rise of 3.6% from 1 October. Forecasters expect a further, larger increase in January. The August deals below were all priced before that announcement, with the cheapest at £1,515 a year.
Ofgem confirmed on 26 August that the energy price cap will rise to £1,723 a year from 1 October 2026, up 3.6% on the current £1,663 level. It is the second consecutive quarterly increase, following July's 13% jump.
The rise would have been steeper without a change to VAT. The government has cut VAT on domestic electricity bills from 5% to zero for the period 1 October 2026 to 31 March 2027, which offsets part of an 11% increase in wholesale costs. Gas bills keep the 5% VAT charge, and the gas wholesale allowance alone is up 13%.
Against that backdrop, the fixed price energy deals released during August look considerably better than the cap. The cheapest came in at £1,515, around £208 below the new October cap, and 100 of the 143 tariffs launched in August were priced under it.
