What is happening?

Scottish and Southern Energy is cutting Standard gas bills by 4% and Standard electricity bills by 9% with effect from 30 March 2009.

Detailed rates have not yet been released. However, based on the headline announcement we expect this to reduce gas bills by £31 a year to £750, electricity bills by £43 a year to £431, and dual fuel bills by £66 a year to £1162.

What we think:

Price cuts are clearly welcome news even if the scale of those cuts is a little on the cautious side. But the key point for energy consumers is this. If you wait for the cuts to kick in you’ll pick up a saving of £70-85. By switching to the cheapest deal now you can pick up a saving of £170 or more. It is not a difficult choice to make.

TheEnergyShop.com is currently recommending British Gas WebSaver 1 tariff for the following reasons.

  • The WebSaver 1 is currently, on average, the cheapest tariff in the market at average energy usage.
  • WebSaver1 guarantees that it will stay at least 10% cheaper than British Gas’ standard tariffs. So if British Gas cuts prices again, WebSaver1 prices will also fall. This guarantee runs all the way through to 31 March 2010.
  • It is available to both new and existing British Gas customers.
  • Whether before or after the British Gas and Scottish and Southern Energy price cuts, customers on Standard tariffs with these suppliers will enjoy significant savings by switching to this product.
  • Please note that there is a £60 exit penalty if you leave before September 2009.
  • Only available online and through selected price comparison websites including www.TheEnergyShop.com
