British Gas results comment

British Gas, the retail energy brand of Centrica plc, today (28 July 2011) reported results for the 6 months to 30 June 2011.
 
Key features of the results

  • 159,000 domestic customer accounts added (100,000 courtesy of Sainsbury’s Energy).
  • The reported operating profit, at £270m, was 54% lower than the comparable period in 2010, but increased 72% sequentially (half on half).
  • Reported operating margin came in at a respectable 6.5%.
  • The interim dividend was increased by 12%.
  • This was the 10th successive period of sustained profitability despite significant volatility in energy costs and prices over that period.

It has now been exactly 1 month since ScottishPower announced its forthcoming price increase to new record levels. Despite widespread expectations that this would trigger a wave of price increases from the other energy suppliers, so far none of the other Big 5 has followed.
